Over the moon to have our dear friend Merlin Nova join Blank Editions with the release of her debut EP, Protect Your Flame.

Protect Your Flame celebrates determination and life, A vast and colourful human emotional landscape that explores sounds ability to excite visualisation. Each track is a scene to exist within.

Vocal delivery, stripped back instrumentation and use of sound effects convey a state of being as efficient as possible. This way of making music evolved out of her weekly radio show Nova Waves, which broadcasted from Subcity radio, on the show Merlin would create music, soundscapes and use sound effects to build imagined worlds. It was not until she was asked to DJ at Subcity’s 20th Birthday Exhibition, ‘pure radio sex’, that she chose to combine her own soundscapes, poetry and song thus beginning the assemblage of this music.

This EP is the first taste of a world with much to explore.

Question: The price tag on the Dub-plate versions is pretty hefty, what gives?

Answer: The reason these records are so expensive is that they are not manufactured in the same way as traditional vinyl records. The manufacture of regular vinyl records involves creating complex metalwork which is then used to press a polycarbonate compound onto a stamper which is then used to create "traditional" vinyl records.

These initial set up costs are then offset by producing many records, therefore engineering a cost effective way to deliver a run of records.

Producing Dub-plates required a different form of production which is not cheap.

We had these records mastered by John Hannon and then individually cut in real-time onto a durable polycarbonate material by Michael Lawrence. The cut and sound quality is phenomenal. Dub-plates ( or lathes as they are often referred to ) serve as an ideal solution for short runs or / and private pressings.

The version we offer here also includes a download code, hand numbered folded card sleeve and an insert that has a unique one of a kind drawing made by Merlin Nova, making this a truly unique package.
